Dance to the Music: Dancing With the Stars and American Idol……Everyone’s a Winner!

As the More is More Mom®, I’m all about………more Dancing with the Stars and American Idol season finales! Where have the past 4 months gone since we were first introduced to all of the “Stars” and met all of the decent contestants during Hollywood week? More importantly, what on Earth are we going to watch during those coveted hours Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings? Certainly not 2 ½ Men (at least until this fall when super cutie Ashton Kutcher hits the scene) and The Voice isn’t totally doing it for me. Seriously, who exactly is Cee Lo Greene (Forget You…woo, hoo, hoo)?

So here we are, down to our final three contestants for the coveted Mirror Ball, and our final two Idol hopefuls…….It’s been a real horse race.

Heading into the final night of DWTS you’ve got Hines Ward (darling, personable and graceful Steeler’s QB), Chelsea Kane (who claims to be a Disney star, but I’ve never seen her on The Suite Life of Zach and Cody and she wasn’t even in High School Musical’s I, II or III) and, of course, America’s favorite, Kirstie Alley (from TV and movie classics such as Cheers and Look Who’s Talking I and II, and the only contestant ever to tame bad boy professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy).

What’s the best way to kick off the season finale party? Obviously with Don’t Stop the Party by the Peas (otherwise known as the Black Eyed Peas), but for me, the party would only have been complete with an appearance from my ultimate boy friend, Season 9 winner, Donny Osmond (and this is not a…..Puppy Love).

With a star studded night, Josh Grobin was quite fine, but if it doesn’t have a beat I can dance to, forgedaboudit (I would have been awesome on American Bandstand or the Soprano’s). As a gal who adores nostalgia, I was thrilled to see Belinda Carlisle and the Go-Go’s (and they have Got the Beat). Country sweetheart, Sarah Evans, made an appearance singing A Little Bit Stronger, which was okay, again, if you like ‘em slow.

The race could have gone any which way, so it all came down to the final round in competition: (best dancer) Chelsea and Mark, with their Hogwart’s inspired Viennese Waltz, (dancer with the most personality and chutzpah) Kirstie and Maks, with the Cha Cha Cha (Forget You……Cee Lo Greene makes a DWTS appearance tonight, too) and (most charming and delightful dancer) Hines and Kym, with the Samba. But which of these competitors reigns supreme?????

The mirror ball trophy goes to, the incomparable………Hines and Kym, bringing it home to the Steeler Nation!

On the other hand (or channel), I haven’t quite gotten over the fact that James Durbin isn’t in the final American Idol race. While I don’t have a classically trained ear, my earliest musical experience comes from exposure to my K-Tel and Donny Osmond albums (you see, everything always comes back to my Donny). What I absolutely adored about James was his range, his passion, his talent and intensity. Even though he’s cute as button and will clearly have a huge career, Scotty McCreary just isn’t doing it for me. As for Lauren Alaina, I think she’s got the chops to be a huge Carrie Underwood/Kelly Clarkson type, but I just can’t shake the feeling that she’s a little bratty. In my house, I might have washed her mouth out with soap (from the pump dispenser for easier clean up). It’s a toss up as to who will walk away victorious, and quite frankly, since it won’t be James, I’m not all that worried. However, I hope they’ve got a super big finale planned……..one where Steven Tyler sings with James (they owe him one)!

More dancing, more singing, more mirror ball trophies, more recording contracts, more stars in the sky…….

Feast Day of the Patron Saint of Teen Idols….Donny Osmond!!

As the More is More Mom®, I’m all about…….more Donny Osmond! Today, December 9, I celebrate the birth of my beloved Donny Osmond. Perhaps to you he is just “A little bit rock n’ roll”, but to me, he is oh so much more. He represents the care free days of my childhood, where I would listen to his records on our turntable for hours, doodling “I Love Donny” all over the back of the jacket covers. While others may have come and gone (Shaun Cassidy and Andy Gibb), Donny was, and will always be, my number one Teen Idol. In his honor, today, I am calling everyone Marie and am wearing my purple socks and a rhinestone studded jumpsuit, which looks a little strange at the grocery store, but I’m not in the least bit embarrassed to share my devotion to Donny Osmond with the world!

This year marked our 4th season as avid viewers of the highly acclaimed television program Dancing with the Stars. While I did love Jennifer Grey, I must say, that Kyle Masse was quite spitfire! I have to admit I was kinda 50-50. We tuned in to DWTS four years ago, for the first time, as a show of support for Olympic Gymnast Shaun Johnson (my Amanda is gymnast, so we were rather partial). Our second season was something truly special however; it was a battle of the Teen Heart Throbs: Aaron Cater versus Donny Osmond. I love that cute little Aaron Carter just as much as the next gal, but come on; did he really think he stood a chance against THE Donny Osmond? Throw in a little Justin Bieber (and I do mean little. He’s such a wee, little cutie petutie, I could put him in my pocket!) and you might have had an interesting competition, yet one that would have ended with the same result. Well, 4 seasons ago, unless you were living under a rock, you know that Donny reigned supreme. Was there ever really any doubt? Of course not! That Disco Ball trophy belonged to one dancer and one dancer only: The Patron Saint of Teen Idols himself.

If I were stranded on a desert island, and could only bring five Donny songs with me to sustain me for the duration of my stay, they would have to be:
1. Yo-Yo
2. Soldier of Love
3. One Bad Apple
4. Sweet and Innocent
5. Saving the best for last….Puppy Love

But, since I am not stranded on a desert island, I am free to listen to my Donny songs at any time, day or night, because….our love affair is not a Puppy Love……….

More devotion, more love, more teen idols…….

We Have Got to Get a Hobby…..

We have got to get a hobby…….. Over the past thirteen years we have experienced a flurry of activity with our children, but now we have hit a lull. Not too long ago our days and evenings were consumed with cross country, basketball, track, baseball, golf and of course, hockey. My Nick has been skating since he was 4 ½ years old, and we have spent the better part of his childhood racing him from rink to rink at all hours of the day and night. These were truly some of the best moments in our family life. Now that he has his driver’s license, we only accompany Nicky to his hockey games, which leaves us with a heck of a lot of free time. Before Nick got his driver’s license we were at his beck and call; picking up friends, dropping them off, waiting around, picking them up. Now however, he pretty much just goes. Long gone are the days that he would ask, while I was making dinner mind you, “Can you run me over to the links so I can hit a bucket of balls?” The answer of course was nearly always “yes,” even though it was inconvenient, because I knew it would someday all come to a screeching halt. Since Nick has had his driver’s license for the past year and a half, all we really have to do is know his whereabouts, and manage to stay awake until he gets home by curfew, which is 11 o’clock. I can stay awake forever if I am vertical, but if I sit, I sleep. Thankfully Chuck possesses the gift of staying awake even if he’s sitting. It’s sad really.

While Amanda doesn’t flit from activity to activity, she is on a very strict schedule. She trains for gymnastics 20 hours per week, 52 weeks a year. She heads to the gym five days a week, four hours at a time, and thankfully for us we only live three stoplights away from our gym, so we can be there in a flash! During the school year, when she has practice on the weeknights, Amanda is chomping at the bit for us to leave at 4:10 (even though gym doesn’t start until 4:30. She doesn’t have her mothers “gift” for never arriving anyplace on time. She always says, “Gym starts at 4:30. It doesn’t say get there at 4:30.” You’ve gotta love her tenacity and dedication! When I was her age the only thing I was dedicated to was….nonsense. Funny how the more things change the more they stay the same….). We live so close that we don’t even have to leave to pick her up until 8:28pm. So, now what do we do?

Well, the answer to that apparently is a great, big, whole lot of nothing! By the time I make dinner, serve dinner, place dinner for Amanda in the warming drawer (best invention ever!), and clean up the mess that was dinner, there isn’t a terrible amount of time to do much of anything….other than watch the idiot box, and I think you know why they call it that.

Why isn’t there ever anything to watch on TV? Seriously, we flippity flip through our cable channels only to find features from the ‘70’s and ‘80’s flashing before our eyes. What!?! Why don’t the smart executives at the major networks figure out a way to feature clever, smart, entertaining programming? It’s pretty sad when we are glued to our set to weigh in on what’s happening with Dancing with the Stars……especially without Donny Osmond as a contestant.
Sunday Nights:
When does Entourage return to HBO? There is nothing to watch, thankfully we frequently have hockey games to attend and we are traveling during Amanda’s meet season.
Monday Nights:
Monday night programming has been enormously improved with Rules of Engagement as a mid-season replacement on CBS, though that only accounts for 30 minutes of the night (22 if you DVR….the only way to watch TV). However, Jeff, played by Patrick Warburton, is not featured nearly enough, as he is the very best part of the show. Though to me, he will forever be Putty from Seinfeld.
Chuck loves Two and a Half Men. If he has his way we turn it on at 6pm and 10:30pm on WGN, so Monday is Charlie Harper bonus day. All I have to say is: thank God they finally ditched that Chelsea because she was sooooo boring. We are thrilled to see the egomaniacal, alcoholic, aging lothario back in business!
Tuesday Nights:
I really dislike Jay Leno, as I am David Letterman kind of gal. Cancelling his awful show has opened up the door for the Tuesday night replacement Parenthood on NBC. I was an enormous fan of the movie and the new series certainly does not disappoint. I give it an “A”.
American Idol is really boring this year. We have given up.
Wednesday Nights:
Best show of TV…..ABC’s Modern Family. Why is it only on for half an hour? One character is funnier than the next, but what I love about this show is that while it’s hysterical each episode concludes with a tender moment that brings the family together and re-enforces their connection and commitment to each other. The More is More Mom® gives Modern Family an A++++++
Thursday Nights:
I want to get it, but I just don’t understand the appeal of The Office. On the other hand I can’t get enough of the hip, fast talking 30 Rock on NBC. Tina Fey has amazing vision, Tracy Morgan is a scream, and Alec Baldwin, well, he’s a comedic genius.
What’s not genius…..Bravo’s The Housewives of……fill in the blank. We always look forward to the New York girls, but they’ve become so boring and one dimensional. When we first met the girls from the Big Apple they were interesting, they had careers and they were charitable. Now they are self obsessed mean girls, one cat fight away from being on Jerry Springer.
Friday and Saturday Nights:
The weekend always brings a potpourri of activity between sports and friends. Thank God for the diversion.
I suppose for now a hobby will have to wait until our little chicks leave the nest. Until then it looks like we’re stuck with the idiot box………..
